Isobel Finnie (she/they) is an emerging performance artist, producer, director and community-engaged arts practitioner with an ethos of curiosity, collaboration and innovation. Socially driven and politically charged, Isobel believes in amplifying the stories that need to be heard, harnessing love, social connection and passion to do so. Through their education at WAAPA in the Bachelor of Performing Arts (Performance Making), Isobel developed a key interest in queer and ecological performance, performative utopias, theories of assembly, and their rich intersections with community-engaged practice. She is now commencing Honours study researching how community integrates and informs our arts praxis, with art taking an active, tangible role in crafting better shared futures. Isobel believes theatre has great potential for social betterment, and tailors their practice towards this, prioritising outreach and accessibility. They are also deeply passionate about regional art and seek to work further in this field in the coming years as both an artist and producer.

Throughout her education, Isobel became known for their experimental approach to art-making, and has a particular interest in alternative forms of theatre. She is particularly interested in the integration of innovative technologies in live performance, seeing traditional notions of liveness problematised by our contemporary techno-ontology. They have a rich practice of AV design, utilising immersive AV mapping to bring the body into direct physical relationship with technology, exploring the interweaving of two choreographies. They are also drawn to non-traditional theatre forms such as site-specific, participatory, immersive and performance artworks, believing these have great scope to provide wider audiences an accessible way into experimental art through kinaesthetic engagement. They have made several works utilising audience volunteers as performers, curating immersive and stimulating experiences around the untrained body, another testament to their passion for public and community.

With themes of resilience, joy and curiosity a pattern in their work, Isobel is excited to move into the next stage of their artistic journey, collaborating with others in artmaking that strives actively towards building the world we wish to see.
